Mat Makers Meeting Notes for 08/25/26

Twenty-one mat makers attended the meeting to be God’s hands and feet! Chris opened our meeting with prayer. Julie, Helen’s friend, visited with us today!!!

August 27 (Thursday) at 10 am – Talladega Health and Rehab residents will receive 145 walker bags. Terri Carson and Chris and a group of Mat Makers attended, can’t wait for the update!

September 5 (Saturday) at 8 am – Mat Makers 1st Saturday Serve will focus on walker bags and lapghans for our veterans. Our card ministry small group will participate. Also, Brenda Williams will have a group making no sew fleece lapghans. Kathryn will lead this event. Wear your Mat Maker shirt!

September 10 (Thursday) at 6:30 pm – The Women’s Ministry for Church of the Highlands is sponsoring a free ladies’ night with dinner provided. This is the yearly conference, this year called “Anthem”.  Register to attend with your fellow members at the Grants Mill campus.

September 26 (Saturday) at time to be determined – Superheroes Fire in Cullman will draw attention to suicide prevention and the homeless population and is sponsored by Karen Cook Ministries. Mat Makers will be one of 30 ministries participating and will focus on our homeless efforts. We will have metal crosses and tiny Jesus figures for giveaways. Andy Jordan will lead this event. Wear your Mat Maker shirt!

October 3 (Saturday) at 8 am – Mat Makers 1st Saturday Serve will showcase many of our ministries to recruit likeminded people and allow them to participate. Lynn P will lead this event. I want to focus mainly on Mats because this is where we need the most productivity right now.  For our other Ministries, I’d like to just have a very small slice to showcase (everything else on 1 table together).  We really need help making Mats as we FALL into the colder season.

Mat Maker shirts are available at Lynn H’s house for $13.

Mats and blessing bags

Valerie delivered our remaining mats to the Woodlawn Dream Center. They have requested more! Laura completed several mat squares this week.

Gift baskets, meals, and other ministries

  • Kathryn, Belinda, Carole and Gwen toured Olivia’s House to assess how we can assist this ministry. Organizing their clothes closet is one future project. They also asked for help with
  • small fundraisers in the future.
  • Carole and Dave attended the Magic City Carnival at the Cahaba Brewery to support Pathways.  Many of our gift baskets were sold in online auctions! Several thousand dollars were raised for this ministry. The staff at Pathways sent a thank you card for our donations.
  • Marteeka and her 6-month-old baby lost everything in a house fire. Some of our members met her at the bus station during our Saturday Serve. Lynn P, Karen L, and her husband, David, delivered a coffee table, recliner, love seat, mattress and bed to her home. The bed was donated by Mia and was assembled by our team. Kathryn gathered items for the kitchen, bath, and bedroom from our She Shed, which were also delivered to Marteeka’s home.  This week, Lynn P’s sister and hubby donated and delivered some dressers and kitchen items.
  • Several members will submit preferred scripture verses for our future scripture card packets.
  • Gwen Cork has volunteered to prepare and print these cards.
  • Get well cards are needed for our card ministry. Give your donations to Valerie or Jessica.

BLOG

I have been working on updating our BLOG to share with others, especially people who would like to help donate bags, yarn, etc.  I have the basics done and I will continue to add as we need.  I decided it would be an easy way to share our weekly newsletters and have a page for that.  I will not be adding the Pray or Praise requests because that is personal.  The link can be shared be email or text.
